5 East County San Diego Hidden Gems

San Diego fun doesn’t stop once you leave downtown. East County offers an array of interesting and one-of-a-kind spectacles that tourists and locals alike can enjoy at little to no cost. From giant structures to hiking trail treasures, there are plenty of attractions that will make you stop, snap a picture, and marvel at.

Lemon Grove Giant Lemon

Originally built as a parade float in 1928, Lemon Grover’s larger-than-life lemon found its way to its permanent home in 1930. Roughly 10-feet-long, the concrete base of the giant fruit is engraved with, “The Best Climate on Earth.” Located next to the Orange Line trolley tracks, this landmark is flanked by, of course, a handful of lemon trees.

Sky Art Sculptures

While driving through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, you’ll likely come across a collection of metal sculptures scattered about the landscape. The Sky Art Sculptures in Borrego Springs, crafted by artist and welder Ricardo Breceda, is a group of 130 art installations that range from dinosaurs, to horses, to a 350 foot sea dragon. These roadside attractions are too unique and quirky to pass up.

Sweetwater River Bridge

As you embark on the three mile Sweetwater Trail Loop, you’ll first cross a photo-worthy bridge that is surrounded by trees and greenery. Built in 1929, the two-lane Sweetwater River Bridge in Spring Valley was once used for Highway 94. Designated as a Historic Bridge, the iron structure now connects visitors to the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.

La Mesa Secret Stairs

Nestled in La Mesa is a 245-step secret staircase installed to make navigating through the neighborhoods easier for pedestrians and provide those traveling on foot with beautiful views of the city. The slightly steep La Mesa secret stairs are adorned by plants and flowers on either side, and really help you get your daily steps in.

Potato Chip Rock

One of the most photographed spots in East County sits at the top of the over seven mile Mount Woodson Trail in Ramona. After reaching the summit, you can celebrate with the distinctive landmark, Potato Chip Rock. The thin rock is known for fun photos because with creative camera work, it looks like you’re perched on the edge of a precarious cliff. Instead, about 40 feet below you is the ground. But your Instagram followers don’t need to know that!
